A VALDOSTA LEGEND

Thirty-seven years in one profession is a rarity.  David’s roots in the car business goes back even further to when he got his first job working for Hulyn Smith Automotive over forty years ago at the tender age of thirteen.  You can say that David has it in his blood and may even bleed gas and oil!  His parents, Foy and Annie Hodges proudly watched him grow up playing football, baseball and delivering newspapers in his native Valdosta for the Valdosta Daily Times. 

As a young adult, David found that he really enjoyed the sport of auto racing.  This “bug” bit hard and remains a large part of his life now as a race car owner.  This passion now continues with the success of his son, David, Jr., driving in the Super Late Model and Pro Late Model Series on area and regional race circuits.  When David, Jr. is not winning races, he’s at his father’s side assisting in the family business and learning the fine art of operating a used car dealership from a true veteran and respected businessman, David Hodges. 

In 1970, David was employed by his father-in-law, Earl Wood of Earl Wood Used Cars and began a career that continues today.  An apt pupil, the business became Wood and Hodges Used Cars in 1972 and remained so until the untimely death of Mr. Wood in 1975.  David moved his business in 1980 from Madison Highway to North Ashley Street where it was renamed David Hodges Cars and Trucks.  Nine years later David was employed at Griner Cadillac as Used Car Manager for five years.  The last thirteen years he has been a fixture at his N. Ashley Street location selling fine cars and trucks under his trade name, David Hodges Cars and Trucks, to the citizens of Valdosta and indeed all of southern Georgia and northern Florida.  A couple of years ago, David expanded with a second lot in the City of Lake Park which also houses the garage and headquarters for Hodges Motorsports. 

David is not just all about cars and trucks and racing.  David and his wife Dale (Dale Hodges Mobile Homes, Inc.) have celebrated thirty-eight years of marital bliss.  They are the proud parents of Michelle, Brenda and David, Jr.  They both dote on their prized grandchildren, Dalton, Mackenzie and Hillary Watley, Lee and Sydni Hodges.  David and Dale are of the Baptist faith and are members of Francis Lake Baptist Church in Lake Park, Ga. where Rev. Eldridge Lyons serves as pastor.  This is no coincidence since they were married by Rev. Lyons in 1969 when attending Grace Baptist Church where he then was pastor.  Longevity in marriage as well as professional life speaks volumes about one’s character and commitment. 

The traits all successful entrepreneurs share are the willingness to work hard, learn and apply superior product and business knowledge while providing outstanding customer service to satisfy the customer’s needs.  David is no exception to this rule.  He displays the confidence and humility that has endeared him to thousands of area citizens enabling him to meet their automotive needs with fairness and professionalism. 
Yes, David Hodges is a legend in Valdosta’s automotive history with his longevity of service to the area.
